The Communication Workers Union (CWU) says it has no choice but to stage two 24-hour stoppages on 22 and 23 October, after Royal Mail rejected its latest set of proposals.
Royal Mail has said it is willing to go to the conciliation service ACAS, but only if the CWU calls off the strikes, which the company calls “unjustified and irresponsible”.
On 22 October, mail centre staff and drivers will strike. So the processing, movement and collection of mail on this day will be limited.
On 23 October, delivery and collection staff will strike. Mail delivery and collection will be affected on this day.
On both days some managerial staff and contract drivers will be brought in to move mail, but services will be “very limited”.
Special Delivery and Royal Mail Tracked items will still be delivered on strike days.
Post Office branches will be open as usual, although collections will be affected and Parcelforce will operate as normal, as it has its own collection, distribution and delivery network.
UPDATE – 26 OCTOBER
The industrial action look set to continue as the two sides in the dispute have failed to reach agreement. We’ll keep you posted (sorry, no pun intended!) about the situation.
UPDATE – 05 NOVEMBER
Great news! The postal workers union has called off a third round of strikes after reaching an “interim” peace deal with Royal Mail management. Leaders of the CWU agreed to postpone further action until the new year while talks take place.
